A 5% Holiday Tax, a policy long championed by the Liberal Democrats, has now been approved by the Government.
This decision will hit Burnham-on-Sea, Berrow and Brean the hardest, one of the most tourism-dependent areas in Somerset.
The Holiday Tax is an act of economic self-harm for Somerset. It punishes families for choosing to holiday at home and punishes small businesses simply for operating here.
Our county relies on domestic tourism to sustain jobs and incomes. Even a modest shift towards overseas travel will cost local jobs, cut wages, and damage our coastal economy.
Somerset Council must rule out introducing a 'Holiday Tax' in Somerset.
I am calling on Liberal Democrat-run Somerset Council to state clearly that they will not support, work to introduce, or apply for the implementation of, any tourist or holiday tax in Somerset.
