Thousands of people signed a petition calling for the return of two-way traffic on Salmon Parade and East Quay.
Somerset Council has now conducted a review which shows that bringing back two-way traffic would deliver the greatest reduction in delays and the best outcome for motorists. When the Somerset Council Executive meets this Wednesday, any decision short of restoring two-way traffic would mean ignoring both the evidence and the views of thousands of local people.
I am also concerned that despite this review taking six months to complete, two months longer than originally promised, local businesses appear not to have been consulted. They are directly affected by these decisions and their voices should have been heard from the outset.
There is funding available within the Celebration Mile budget to carry out the necessary works. The money is there, the data supports it, and local people have made their views clear.
Anything less than restoring two-way traffic onto Salmon Parade and East Quay would ignore both the evidence and the wishes of the thousands of Bridgwater residents who signed the petition.
I hope the Liberal Democrat Executive do the right thing and decide to bring back two-way traffic.
