Bridgwater MP Ashley Fox laced up a pair of gloves and stepped into the ring as he paid a visit to Sydenham Amateur Boxing Club, home to some of Somerset’s most promising young fighters.
The visit gave Ashley the chance to meet the club’s head coach Rob and chat with the young people who train there, many of whom have competed and won at regional, national, and even international level. The club has built a reputation for discipline, community spirit, and developing talent from the grassroots up.
Ashley said he was hugely impressed by the energy, focus, and ambition of the young boxers and the coaching team who give up their time to support the next generation. He said, “This is a disciplined, focused environment where young people are clearly thriving. The coaches are doing a fantastic job not just in training athletes but in mentoring them and creating a sense of purpose and pride. I’m hugely impressed by everyone involved. It’s no surprise they’re producing winners!”
The visit follows a string of strong performances from the club, including success at the King of the Ring tournament in Sweden, the largest amateur boxing competition in Europe, and impressive showings at local events.
Rob, head coach, said “We have a great team of coaches and boxers all working well together. We always welcome anyone new to the gym on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 6.30 till 8pm.”
