Ashley Fox MP has officially opened the newly refurbished Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) at the George Williams Centre in Bridgwater, celebrating a community effort that brought local organisations and businesses together to transform the facility.
The refurbished MUGA will provide a safe and accessible space for sport, recreation and community activities and is already being used by Disability Cricket, Somerset Cricket Foundation and Little Crickets Nursery.
The project was made possible through the support of several organisations which contributed their time, expertise, and materials.
RK Bell carried out the initial appraisal, Tripod Crest removed the old surface and prepared the site, Holcim UK and Aggregate Industries supplied materials, Connor Construction South West laid the new surface, and Wilson & Scott Highways Ltd completed the line marking.
Pippa Birch, founder of Pipster Solutions, also volunteered her time to bring the different organisations involved together and help make the project a reality.
Ashley Fox MP officially opened the new facility and thanked everyone who had contributed to the project.
Ashley Fox MP said:
"It was a pleasure to officially open the new MUGA and see what has been achieved. This is a great example of what can happen when a charity, local businesses and the community come together to create something positive for local people. This is a fantastic facility for the community, and I am delighted to see it open and already being put to such good use."
Pippa and her brother Jon Clarey, Centre Manager at the George Williams Centre, both grew up using YMCA facilities themselves, making their involvement in creating opportunities for the next generation particularly significant.
Jon Clarey, Centre Manager at the George Williams Centre, said:
"We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has contributed to this fantastic project. The refurbished MUGA is already making a real difference, providing a safe, accessible and high-quality space for sport, recreation and community activities. This project demonstrates the positive impact that can be achieved when local organisations come together to support their community.”
The newly refurbished facility will now continue to be available for local groups and the wider community, providing a high-quality space for a range of sporting and recreational activities.
