Bridgwater’s Friday Market remains a vital part of town centre life — and local MP Ashley Fox is encouraging residents to shop local and support the independent traders who help keep the town thriving.
Ashley Fox, a regular visitor to the market in Fore Street, met with several stallholders to hear how business is going and to show his continued support. The market runs every Friday from 9am to 2pm and features a wide variety of stalls — from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothing and gifts.
“Bridgwater is open for business,” said Ashley Fox. “And the Friday Market is a great example of local entrepreneurship. It brings people into the town, supports jobs, and helps sustain the character of our high street.”
Markets have long played a role in Bridgwater’s economic and social life. The town’s market history stretches back over 800 years, with trade and commerce central to its growth as a riverside settlement. Today, that tradition continues every week as stallholders set up shop and welcome shoppers from across the area.
Ashley Fox added, “Many of the traders I spoke to have been coming here for years. Others are newer and bring something different to the mix. At a time when many town centres face real pressure — from online competition, changing habits, and long-running roadworks — it’s important we do what we can to back the traders who are showing up and offering something different to our town.”
The Friday Market complements Bridgwater’s established retailers and independent shops, offering an alternative way to browse and buy. “Whether you’re picking up something for the weekend or just passing through, visiting the market is a simple but meaningful way to support local trade,” Ashley said.
