Sir Ashley Fox MP has visited Pentathlon Carnival Club in Moorland to see the damage caused by severe flooding earlier this year and to offer his support to volunteers working to rebuild.
The club, based in Moorland, was hit by floodwater in January after heavy rainfall across the Somerset Levels. Water rose to several feet inside the carnival shed, leaving tools, materials and equipment damaged beyond repair and exposing their main cart to prolonged winter weather.
During the visit Ashley Fox met with club members including chair Vikki McKenna-Wren, to hear directly about the impact of the flooding and the scale of the recovery effort now underway.
Ashley Fox said, “Seeing the damage in person really brings home the scale of what Pentathlon Carnival Club has been through. Carnival is a huge part of our community in Bridgwater, North Petherton, Burnham and the surrounding villages. Clubs like Pentathlon are at the heart of that, bringing people together across generations. Thank you to everyone who has been able to support the club so far.”
Vikki McKenna-Wren, Chair of Pentathlon Carnival Club said, “The flooding has had a huge impact on our club, however, the support we’ve received from the local community and fellow carnival clubs has been incredible and has kept us going. We have been truly overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity.
We’re determined to rebuild and come back stronger, but it will take time and resources. Visits like this really help raise awareness of what we’re facing and what’s needed to get us back on our feet. Carnival means so much to all of us, and we’re committed to keeping that tradition alive for future generations.”
