Bridgwater MP Sir Ashley Fox has visited a family-run farm in Over Stowey, where he discussed the impact of the Government’s proposed ‘Family Farm Tax’.
Ashley met Keith and Jackie, who run their beef, sheep and arable farm with their sons, James and George. They spoke about the challenges facing farmers across Somerset and the serious implications of the Government’s inheritance tax changes.
Set to begin in April 2026, the new policy introduces a 20% tax on agricultural assets over £1 million. Ashley warned that the measure could make it harder for family farms to be passed down through generations, forcing some to sell land or livestock just to cover tax bills.
“Family farms are the backbone of our rural economy,” said Ashley. “They feed the nation, care for the countryside, and support local jobs. This policy risks breaking up farms that have been built over generations. The Government must develop a more sustainable approach that protects family farming in Somerset.”
Ashley has met with representatives from the National Farmers’ Union and continues to raise the issue, urging ministers to reconsider the tax and support a fairer approach for Family Farmers.
